/ˈtouˌizəm,ˈdouˌizəm/ (pronounced and often spelled Daoism)
Taoism is an ancient Chinese philosophy and religion that emphasizes living in harmony with the Tao, the natural, underlying flow of the universe. Core principles of Taoism include Wu Wei (effortless action) and Yin Yang (balance), aiming for inner peace, longevity, and alignment with nature. This ancient philosophy devised the Yin Yang (Taijitu) symbol in the 11th Century. An iconic, globally popular and recognizable symbol, the black and white swirls serve as a visual representation of the opposing yet equal, complimentary, interconnected, interdependent forces emblematic of the dynamic balance that exists in the world (with both parts essential to the existence of the whole). Examples of this dynamic balance are night/day, rest/activity, summer/winter and inhalation/exhalation.
