Vision CD

Vision represents the first and only album (CD) released by Jim Reed Jr. (JRJR). Having studied piano under Alice Hackett as a young child followed by Charlene Bellinger in his teens, he began experimenting and composing melodies during his college years in the 1980’s. All of the tunes originated from the family’s Wurlitzer console piano that his parents purchased from Mid-Bell Music in Fort Dodge in the 1960’s (a piano that he still has to this day).

After years of tinkering with the music, he began writing lyrics for many of his songs in the mid 1990’s. With a goal of recording and bringing the songs to life, Reed reached out to Kirk Kauffman, Owner of Junior’s Motel and renowned member of the legendary Fort Dodge area band, HAWKS. Working with Kauffman at his “chicken coop” recording studio just outside of Otho (Iowa), Reed played all the piano tracks and sang all vocals while contracting studio musicians to play and record the supporting instrumental parts.

Recording took place throughout 1997 into spring of 1998. Reed also conceived the exterior and interior CD artwork. The design was a subtle, subliminal call for unity centered around the included song entitled, Harmony. Other lyrical themes included Saying Goodbye, a song about the death of his Uncle Carl; A Girl Like You, about the end of his first meaningful relationship: and Time Keeps Ticking, a song about how short life is (hence his motivation for fulfilling the dream of recording an album at the time, before perhaps someday he couldn’t). Each of the 9 tracks were developed from personal experiences and observations of the artist.
